How to Find Your Online Therapist With E-Therapy

POSTED ON 10/08/2021 IN E-Therapy Help

Being presented with a list of therapists and counsellors can be daunting. Reaching out to a stranger when you are feeling down or vulnerable may evoke feelings of anxiety. This post is to help guide you towards finding the best therapist and making the process easy.

First, some things to remember about choosing your therapist

Remember that the therapist that can help you is out there, but it may not be who you expect from first impressions.

Also, know that personal fit is very important and that for most people it may take a few tries to find a therapist who is most aligned with their needs and personality.

Don’t get too attached to the idea of “choosing correctly”. Read our advice below, then make your best guess. If you want to change therapists after a few sessions, or even after just one, that is perfectly fine.

It will be impossible to get help from a therapist if you are stuck reading their profiles, overthinking, and never actually reach out. If you are looking for a change in your life, be brave and take that first action. This is the best way to find a therapist.

To find therapists that are more likely to be a good match for you, answer these questions

Ask yourself the following questions. You might want to take note of your answers on paper on in a note on your phone or computer:

1. Do you already know what specific issue you need help with?

IF YES: Use the E-Therapy “Therapy For” filter to quickly find therapists that specialise in helping people similar to you.2

2. Are you only interested in finding a male therapist or only interested in finding a female therapist?

IF YES: Use the E-Thearpy “Gender” filter to narrow down the list of therapists to people you are more likely to be comfortable with.

3. Is there a specific form of therapy that you already know you want to pursue (eg CBT)?

If YES: In the E-Therapy search options, type into the approach field what you are looking for, such as “CBT”, and press the magnifying glass icon.

If NO: That’s fine! If you want, you can find more advice about the forms of therapy available in our detailed guides to therapy types. But you can also talk this through with any therapist and figure it out along the way.
